Nonfarm Payrolls
The number of paid jobs in the US outside farming, counted each month by the Bureau of Labor Statistics from a survey of about 119,000 businesses and government agencies. The headline is the change from the month before: “employers added 150,000 jobs.” Farm jobs are left out because they swing with the seasons, and so are the self-employed and household workers. Because it counts jobs, not people, someone with two jobs is counted twice. It is usually released on the first Friday of the month at 8:30 AM Eastern, and it is one of the reports markets move on most.
